Yes — Omegle is still down. The original Omegle.com site shut down permanently on November 8, 2023, and founder Leif K-Brooks has not announced any plan to bring it back. If you search for Omegle today, you may see copycat domains, but none are the official platform.
Why Omegle shut down
Omegle closed after years of moderation failures and mounting legal pressure, including lawsuits tied to harm on the platform. The cost of operating an unmoderated random video chat site at scale became unsustainable. For the full story, read our guide on why Omegle shut down.
Is Omegle coming back?
There is no credible evidence that the original Omegle will return. Unofficial clones use similar names but lack the same infrastructure — and often repeat the same safety problems. Treat any site claiming to be “Omegle back online” with caution.
Where to chat with strangers instead
The best post-Omegle platforms combine anonymous matching with real moderation, interest-based matching, and tools to report or block bad actors. PairUp.chat was built after Omegle’s closure with AI moderation, vibe lobbies, mini-games, and optional friend chat — free in the browser with no download.
